The Departure of Attorney General Jeff Sessions Could Be Good for Weed Advocates
The fate of federal marijuana regulation got a jolt Wednesday with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, resigning from his post. Sessions, a hard-lined advocate for enforcing federal laws that prohibit marijuana cultivation, sale and use, has been replaced, at least for now, by his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker. Weed investors rejoice.

During the 2018 midterm elections, four states had some form of marijuana legalization on the ballot. Michigan and North Dakota put recreational up to a vote, while residents of Missouri and Utah decided whether to legalize medical marijuana. Mexico’s next interior minister plans to submit a bill to create a medical marijuana industry and allow recreational use. If the bill passes, Mexico would join Canada, Uruguay and a host of U.S. states that permit recreational use of the drug and allow its commercialization. It would be one of the most populous countries to roll back prohibition.
